The Slump.

Meetings. More of the Same. Caution. Rigid. Stuck. The Slump.

Do you have periods of “The Slump” where you feel stuck, purposeless, held back, uninspired, and motionless?  One of my greatest fears is losing myself in a culture of complacency and self-service. I find myself in a vulnerable place less in control of the overall culture than in previous roles.  It’s a shift and one of the greatest tests I have faced in my leadership journey.

It has forced a lot of leadership self-reflection, growth, and more opportunities to overcome “The Slump.”

Here are some of my greatest reflections from “The Slump” moments:

  • Approval comes from within.  Meeting our own expectations will always be our greatest challenge.

  • Meeting the perceived expectations of others will always bring anxiety and rob us of joy.

  • Always imagine yourself in your rocking chair at 85.  Ask yourself if this struggle will matter then. Ask yourself what memories will this struggle have robbed you of.

  • Be an inspiration.

  • Hope is vital to the soul.  Always know there is a better and different way when the path we are on is a determined dead end.

  • The learning we have today will grow exponentially if we remain a learner.

  • We thrive in challenging times.  It’s when we grow the most.

  • We are obligated to keep trying.  It’s what we were created for.

  • Keep searching for your purpose.

  • Be cautious of the glory seekers.

  • In all things, exercise great humility.
